Gary Neville names the ‘brutal’ manager Man Utd should hire as Ralf Rangnick’s replacement

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag remain the frontrunners to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer, and work to find a long-term replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will accelerate in the coming weeks.

United is also thought to be keeping an eye on Thomas Tuchel’s situation at Chelsea, although the German appears to have found a home in west London and would be difficult to entice away from Stamford Bridge.

Diego Simeone might be difficult to entice away from Atletico Madrid, but Neville believes the explosive Argentine would be an excellent Rangnick successor.

The 51-year-old has transformed Atletico into one of Europe’s most tenacious sides, masterminding United’s Champions League defeat in midweek, and Neville would love to see him in the Premier League.

‘Diego Simeone should be an option, but getting him out of Atletico Madrid has never been possible,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘He’s tied in there, he’s wed.’ But it would be fantastic to see him in the Premier League, as you witnessed on Tuesday night, and as I’ve said before, I was beaten 2-0 in Valencia by Griezmann’s superb Atletico Madrid club before he moved to Barcelona.

‘Amazing coach, harsh in his approach to the game in every manner,’ says one player. He’s a harsh boss, and Manchester United really need one.

‘Manchester United need a manager who can fight with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola – they’re the greatest – and I believe Simeone can do that.

‘I wouldn’t rule Simeone out completely, but I believe Ten Hag and Pochettino are the best options because they’ll want a progressive coach who plays a specific style of football, who is also likely to be a little bit cheaper and more readily available.

‘I don’t know how much it would cost Atletico Madrid to get Simeone out, but Manchester United would have to spend a lot of money.’
