Manchester United was denied an early goal by tenacious Southampton defending in the Premier League meeting between the two teams.

On 18 minutes, hearts were in mouths at St Mary’s Stadium as United created a number of chances on goal, only for the Saints’ defense to keep each one out in quick succession.

It all started when Diogo Dalot blasted the ball towards Southampton’s box. The ball went pleasantly to Anthony Elanga, whose first attempt was easily stopped by Gavin Bazunu after Bruno Fernandes’ header was mistimed. The Swede was able to get a foot around it on the rebound, but the ball slipped away from the goal line.

Fernades then attempted a volley just a few feet from the goal, but it was stopped by defender Armel Bella-Kotchap. The ball was then spilled to Christian Eriksen, who hammered it through the middle – but Saints center-back Mohammed Salisu flung himself in the way, in yet another incredible block.

As the fans rose to their feet and applauded, the ball was eventually sent out for a corner. Those on social media back home were almost as taken aback by what they had just watched.

“That is an elite level goal mouth scramble,” one person said online. League 2 clubs would love for anything like that.” “How have United not scored?” questioned another. Southampton’s line defense was outstanding. Three outstanding blocks.” “WHAT a save by Gavin Bazunu and great Southampton defense,” said a third.

“3 back-to-back blocks, simply fantastic defending there by the opposition!” said another. #SOUMUN #MUFC GG.”

“That is fantastic defense from Southampton,” one last commentator commented.

After a shaky start to the season, United are searching for their second win of the season, with the Glazers’ ownership and a perceived lack of transfer activity overshadowing on-field problems.

The Premier League giants were thrashed by Brentford after losing their first game of the season to Brighton. They did, however, pick up their first points of the season against archrivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, winning 2-1.
