Forget Mauricio Pochettino, Man United MUST Target Thomas Tuchel – MARTIN SAMUEL

This morning at Old Trafford, there should not be any debate about Mauricio Pochettino. Tuchel, Thomas. That name should be at the top of everyone’s to-do list.

Tuchel, Antonio Rudiger, and possibly Harry Kane are all candidates. That, right there, is the start of the great rebuild.

Pochettino’s decision to give up a two-goal lead against Real Madrid just hours before an earthquake struck Chelsea could not have come at a worse time.

Everything changed, and not only in Paris or at Stamford Bridge. Tuchel is the best manager on the market right now, even if PSG has decided to part ways with Pochettino.

He’s close with Rudiger, a free agent this summer who didn’t seem particularly devoted to Chelsea before their prospects were shattered overnight.

Pochettino is still Kane’s manager. However, he was glad to join Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona last summer and, one imagines, would not be hesitant to join the largest club in the world and a Champions League-winning manager if a fee can be agreed upon with Tottenham.

Tuchel might also appreciate working with a legitimate striker for the first time. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Manchester United, the result of a series of events. Let’s see if they can come up with a method to screw it up.

If Ralf Rangnick is as much of a mentor to Tuchel as has been stated, all it takes is one quiet phone call to determine his desire to leave the Premier League.

If Tuchel wants to stay at Chelsea, no one has to know about the phone conversation, and hey, Mauricio. If Tuchel is tempted – and who could blame him under such perilous circumstances – all that remains is to figure out how to pull off such a daring maneuver. If this results in a stampede for the exit at Chelsea, that’s also to Manchester United’s benefit.

What exactly do they require? What exactly do they require? Consider the Chelsea players who would be a good fit for United right now: Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Thiago Silva, and N’Golo Kante. Ben Chilwell, Mason Mount, and Kai Havertz are among the players.

Of course, this isn’t a realistic shopping list. The government owes the football club a duty of care, which cannot be fulfilled by selling their finest players to a rival. Some effects, however, are unavoidable, while others will go unnoticed.

Declan Rice has been laying the basis for a move across London for several months now at West Ham. He’s talked about his Chelsea beginnings, his affection for Chelsea, and his friendship with Mount. So, what’s next?

The sanctions against Roman Abramovich present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one particular team. Is there anyone else who wants Rice? Manchester United is a football club based in England.

This morning, not everyone will be looking at Chelsea’s starting lineup. The squads of Liverpool and Manchester City are both quite powerful. Arsenal and Tottenham may not be able to compete with Chelsea’s pay structure. Manchester United, on the other hand, is in desperate need of a comprehensive renovation and has the financial resources to compete with Real Madrid for Rudiger.

Negotiations can be difficult. Could Tuchel simply walk out if he wanted to? Would it be seen by the government as Abramovich getting his fair desserts, or is Chelsea now an asset to be sold, with the continuous employment of one of Europe’s best managers as one of its draws?

What about the players? Young men like James, Mount, and Havertz, not those who aren’t under contract? Who decides whether or not to join a club with higher prospects, who sets the price or closes the door? Is Marina Granovskaia still involved, or is her ties to Abramovich too visible and strong?

So yet, only entry-level executive management has been considered. For away excursions, there are pies, tickets, and motels. Who has the power to either resist or accept the eventual raid on the reigning world and European champions’ staff and players? Do you know who Nadine Dorries is?

So, what does this mean for Pochettino? Depends.

If, as appears to be the case, the defeat against Real Madrid marks the beginning of the end for him at PSG, his situation becomes far more easy. He could be unattached shortly, and it’s thought he’d like to know he’s United’s first choice. The outcome of this week’s election, on the other hand, casts doubt on that position.

Another potential Pochettino suitor, Real Madrid, is in the business of keeping their fans happy, and why would his standing be high at the Bernabeu after turning a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 defeat? Once again, the timing is bad. When has Pochettino and United done anything else?

Perhaps Tuchel has already been contacted. United may have a response, and it isn’t promising. Pochettino is no longer plan A if there is a chance of getting Tuchel. It’s possible that certain things weren’t meant to be.
