According to Thomas Tuchel, Trevoh Chalobah was more than deserved his Chelsea debut in the UEFA Super Cup and has continued to demonstrate his worth to the club ahead of the Premier League’s opening weekend.
Those were Tuchel’s words following our penalty shootout victory over Belfast City, in which Chalobah began at the back and played the entire game, impressing with his calmness on the ball and clever assessment of the situation.
After returning to Cobham following the summer break, the 22-year-old has emerged as one of the team’s most impressive performers so far this pre-season. He has managed to maintain his place in the squad despite the return of several internationals in the last couple of months, including England’s captain, Joe Hart.
In spite of spending 14 years growing up at Chelsea and three productive loan spells, Tuchel’s start for the Blues at Windsor Park marked the first competitive involvement of his senior Chelsea career. Following his start at Windsor Park, Tuchel explained why he felt he deserved the opportunity to line up for his boyhood club.
‘He has pushed his way into my way of thinking,’ the CEO admitted. In games against Bournemouth, Arsenal, and Tottenham (all of which he played well in), we wanted to have players on the pitch who were capable of playing the full 90 minutes.
« Trevoh was the very first in training, and he is a physically powerful individual. Because of his previous performances, he was deserving of a chance to play.’
Neither Kurt Zouma nor Callum Hudson-Odoi had more touches or made more interceptions than the England Under-21 international, who started on either side of Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta but concluded the game in the middle of the field between the two of them.
- Lionel Messi makes himself available for trade as Liverpool completes a £78 million double transfer.
Our defender, Nathaniel Chalobah, remained calm in the midst of our most recent pre-season adventure, and Tuchel praised the defender for maintaining his composure before sharing some views on his future intentions for the defense this season.
‘He had regained his strength,’ he continued. ‘He struggled at times, but with Azpi at his side and Jorgi close by and assisting him tactically, he was able to rise to the occasion once more. He never lost his cool, he maintained his composure, and he was physically fit enough to play 120 minutes.
As a result, he was able to push his way into our collective consciousness once more. Let’s see where he goes from here. We still have a few days to make a decision on his personal future, but for the time being, he is demonstrating his worth to the squad.’
- Following Lionel Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, Cristiano Ronaldo responded to the message.
Chalobah was just happy to be part, and he was rewarded for his efforts by receiving his first medal on his very first outing for the club.
The experience, he confessed, was a boy’s dream come true. The fact that I’ve been here since I was nine years old and am now participating in my first competitive game and winning a trophy is incredible to me.
‘When I returned from my loan, my major objective was to impress the management and to offer everything I had in training and games. He put his faith in me to get things started, and I believed I did a good job. I felt powerful throughout the game despite the fact that it lasted 120 minutes, and the squad worked really hard, which paid off.
‘Now we’ll just have to wait and see what happens and what the manager says, but whatever happens, I’m going to support it wholeheartedly.’
