Footage of Cristiano Ronaldo appearing to spit in the direction of Anthony Elanga has sparked outrage on social media.

Following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday, a viral video circulated showing the superstar appearing to gob on the back of his teammate.

The more plausible explanation is that viewers were misled by the camera angle.

There’s a chance Ronaldo spat behind the Swedish teenager and it only appeared to touch him.

But that didn’t stop thousands of people from reacting to the video.

“At least he had one shot on target,” one person wrote.

“I saw this during the game and assumed I dreamt it, but wtf,” said another.

Southampton’s breathless performance cost United two points at Old Trafford.

After the game ended in a 1-1 tie, Ralf Rangnick warned the players that they needed to learn to be headstrong and “be nasty” as they exited the field to a chorus of boos.

Che Adams canceled out Jadon Sancho’s first-half opening as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team earned a point, reducing United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

After the Premier League match, Paul Scholes said that the players were unwilling to run for the German manager, and while Rangnick refuted such charges, he did remark the players needed to learn how to be harsh.

“The question isn’t how much we run,” he explained.

“It’s about how we can get more compact, more aggressive – and even more nasty [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic] [sic]

“I’m aware of what Paul Scholes stated, and I don’t believe the players are unwilling to run.”

“However, it comes down to the type of players we have and how they want to play.”

“Our club has never been a pressing team, and changing those habits in a couple of weeks without a pre-season is not possible.”

“However, no one should believe that the players don’t care or want to have experiences like today.”

United is fifth in the rankings, tied on points with West Ham (40), but with a lower goal difference.
