The 29-year-old has had to make do with a supporting role at United this season, having failed to start a single Premier League game and appearing in just 88 minutes.

Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he performed admirably, and he has been linked with a move away in the January transfer window.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the England international will not leave United next month, but will instead stay until the conclusion of the season.

The midfielder’s contract will expire at that time, and he is unlikely to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club before then.

Many United fans reacted to the news on Twitter, with some criticizing Lingard for his apparent lack of ambition and others claiming that then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not ruthless enough in keeping a player on the fringes of the club.
