Erik Ten Hag have made five strong promises to Ronaldo after shameful Man City Display ahead of next game

Rui Faria, Jose Mourinho’s former No. 2 at Manchester United, has cautioned Erik ten Hag that he must address two of the club’s major difficulties if his reign is to be considered a success and avoid rumors of being fired.

The Red Devils entered Sunday’s derby against Manchester City in high spirits, having won five of their previous six games in all competitions. Indeed, four consecutive Premier League victories had relieved Ten Hag’s early pressure and hinted that his methods were beginning to bear fruit.

United, on the other hand, were 4-0 behind at halftime and went on to lose 6-3 as Pep Guardiola’s team taught them a lesson. Both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks to add salt to their wounds.

However, Faria, who worked as Mourinho’s assistant for 17 years at a number of clubs, including United, believes the club’s problems are more serious.

And, rather than merely throwing money at the difficulties, he has told Ten Hag that he must first address two long-standing challenges.

In an interview with The Times, Faria states that while working at United, it was clear that the team lacked consistency and an identity.

And he believes that is still an issue to this day. He also implies that Ten Hag must act soon to avoid being the latest manager to fall on his sword at Old Trafford.

“We came into a club that was lacking in stability and identity, and you don’t just click your fingers and restore it.”

“It takes time, and you must also win because people will not accept you if you do not win.”

“So Jose is correct when he says (2017-18) is one of his best seasons. That is when we won the club’s last two championships. That was its most successful time since (Sir Alex) Ferguson.”

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Ten Hag has been United’s fifth permanent manager.

Moreover, despite the lavish expenditure, the club has rarely shown capable of fighting for the Premier League title.

Faria has urged United to give Ten Hag more time, comparing his role to that of Pep Guardiola at City.

“What is still lacking is stability, and the club must define what it wants.”

“Pep is now in his sixth season at City.” He has the stability of implementing his ideals in the club, the stability of acquiring players who fit his concepts, and the stability of acquiring players on top of (past) accomplishments.”

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will get the time he requires at United. There will be no magic wand, and they will not rise from sixth to challenge for the crown overnight.

Clearly, the derby defeat on Sunday – and you can read 16 conclusions from the game here – demonstrates just how great the chasm genuinely is. However, firing Ten Hag before two seasons would be a hazardous decision. History shows that some of the most successful managers required time and patience to put their ideas into action.

Liverpool, for example, had to wait four years for Jurgen Klopp to win their first prize, the Champions League. He had never looked like he was about to be fired in the previous years.

United, meanwhile, only needs to consider how long it took Ferguson to get things right. Their FA Cup triumph in 1990, four years after his employment, is widely regarded as his watershed moment.

However, in this day and age, people and supporters get impatient for victory. The rashness of supporters was on display yesterday when a part of them left at halftime with United behind 4-0.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, will need to show signs of improvement this season in order to avoid sack talk. They aspire to finish in the top four and potentially compete for a trophy. Failure to do so will result in questioning and knives being sharpened.

However, as Faria points out, this is not always the best option.
