According to the Manchester Evening News, the Ajax manager has emerged as United’s favorite choice for the position of permanent manager. The team has yet to make a final decision on their new manager, although they plan to do so before the end of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, is still being considered, while United has refused to rule out a move for Thomas Tuchel, despite the current instability at Chelsea. Ten Hag, on the other hand, appears to be taking the lead in the club’s quest.

Ten Hag’s ability to create two successful squads following the sales of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong in 2019 has impressed United. The club is also interested in the Dutchman’s potential for a long tenure in charge, having joined Ajax in 2017.

The 52-year-old is under contract with Ajax until next year and would command a paltry compensation sum if he were to leave. If he moves to Old Trafford, he will have a tremendous challenge ahead of him this summer.

Following a disappointing season, United will have a large turnover of players at the end of the season. Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, and Anthony Martial all appear to be on their way out, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains a mystery.

After returning to Old Trafford last summer, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner still has a year left on his contract, but the Portuguese midfielder could opt to leave if United fail to qualify for the Champions League. Ten Hag, on the other hand, has previously stated that he admires Ronaldo, potentially leaving the door open for him to stay.

Ten Hag remarked ahead of his match against Juventus in 2019: “If Ronaldo plays, I think it’ll be great. We’d like to compete against the finest opponent we can find. That’s a challenge, and we enjoy taking on new ones. It’s incredible to be able to compete with a player like Ronaldo.”

Following their respective clubs’ Champions League losses, Ten Hag and Pochettino remain the frontrunners for the post, and discussions with either manager should be easier. Pochettino is anticipated to be fired by PSG, with United having looked into the potential of releasing him from his contract in November.
