Erik ten Hag praised Manchester United midfielder Alejandro Garnacho’s play against Rayo Vallecano.

Garnacho accompanied United on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, although he did not make a single appearance. Garnacho was also left out of the squad that will travel to Oslo, Norway, on Saturday to face Atletico Madrid.

Garnacho, on the other hand, was handed the opportunity to start against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday. The meeting against the La Liga team was United’s final pre-season fixture and an opportunity for Garnacho to impress Ten Hag.

Garnacho played 70 minutes and looked dangerous throughout, despite beginning on the left wing. After the game, Ten Hag was asked about the youngster and confessed that he believed his performance was “very good.”

“Overall, definitely [satisfied with pre-season], I think we have a nice pre-season and we make good development,” Ten Hag said to MUTV. “We are prepared for the season, but I am aware that there is still much potential for development, and we must improve.”

“That is also a process that goes throughout the season, but the outcome is equally important for next week.” It [team selection] was a combination of experience and youth; some guys met for the first time today, so who knows what to expect?

“You could see the optimistic attitude; they struggled and worked for one other.” We generated a lot of chances, and while we did concede some, I believe we should be pleased with our performance.

“We want to give young players who deserve a chance a chance to play.” He [Garnacho] demonstrated himself during the preseason, which is why he played. He performed well and had an excellent performance.”
