Erik ten Hag has left open the prospect of deposing Harry Maguire as captain ahead of his first season as Manchester United manager.

Maguire has been club captain since January 2020, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed him, but he has had a horrible season personally.

During Ralf Rangnick’s interim administration, his status in the starting XI has come under scrutiny, and Maguire’s role as captain has been debated inside the dressing room.

This season, Bruno Fernandes has served as vice-captain and has worn the armband in Maguire’s absence, but on the last day of the season at Crystal Palace, the center-back was named captain.

But Ten Hag made no guarantees that Maguire would keep his position, praising his commitment to the club since joining from Leicester City for £80 million in the summer of 2019.

“Next season will be different, but he performed a fantastic job, he is a fantastic player, and he has already accomplished a lot with his commitment to Manchester United.” “I’m excited to work with him,” Ten Hag added.
