In the highly anticipated derby clash at Old Trafford, Manchester United made an impressive start. However, their optimism was short-lived as they fell behind to an Erling Haaland penalty midway through the first half.

In the second half, Manchester City dominated the match, with Haaland scoring another goal and providing an assist to Phil Foden as City cruised to a memorable 3-0 victory.

The outcome of the derby match has only added to the pressure on Ten Hag, who has had a challenging start to the 2023/24 season.

This comes after he received numerous accolades during his first year in charge. The fact that his players are reportedly dissatisfied with his tactics against City does not bode well for him or Manchester United.

According to reports from The Sun, a number of United players were left perplexed by Ten Hag’s tactical choices.

These included the decision to deploy Victor Lindelof as a left-back instead of Sergio Reguilon and opting to use Bruno Fernandes in a wide attacking role rather than in his preferred central position, where he excels.

Despite the disappointing performance in the derby and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the club, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to take control of sporting matters, Ten Hag’s position is reportedly not in immediate jeopardy.

This is because Manchester United’s chief executive, Richard Arnold, who was present at Sunday’s match, has conveyed that the club is still making “good progress” under Ten Hag’s leadership.

This support for the Dutchman comes even as Manchester United experiences their worst start to a season in 37 years.

Arnold expressed similar sentiments about Ten Hag in a recent extraordinary meeting, emphasizing that the manager has the full backing of the club’s leadership.

Nonetheless, the dissatisfaction from the dressing room remains a concern, especially considering that Manchester United has suffered five losses in their first ten Premier League matches.

The club has also faced challenges in European competitions, though they finally secured their first win in the Champions League last week after two previous attempts.

After a challenging afternoon at Old Trafford, where some fans voiced their displeasure when Rasmus Hojlund was substituted while United was chasing the game, Ten Hag maintained a positive outlook.

He told reporters, “The three games before we won, and the spirit is very good, so I think we are on the way up.

The start was difficult, but we are on the way up. I am sure when we have some injured players coming back, our side will be stronger. We have to be patient.”
