Edinson Cavani’s contract with the Red Devils expires in June, and he is largely anticipated to leave as a free agent.

Rangnick stated on Friday that a new striker will be signed this summer to replace the Uruguayan veteran.

He said to the press: “This is self-evident. The team needs the finest potential centre forward because Edinson’s [Cavani] contract expires in the summer. This is a no-brainer. That is something I believe everyone is aware of.”

And the German coach might go after a renegade name who has been putting up monster figures in his home country this season.

Rangnick is a big fan of Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, according to BBC Sport.

Only Robert Lewandowski has scored more goals in Europe’s top five divisions than the 26-year-old this season, with 18 goals in as many Bundesliga games.

Schick is putting up similar figures to Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic, but he has slipped between the cracks in several clubs’ striker hunts.

Cristiano Ronaldo is United’s leading goalscorer in the Premier League, but his tally pales in comparison to that of the Czech striker.

In addition to Cavani, if Rangnick’s side fails to qualify for the Champions League, Ronaldo’s future at the club could be jeopardized.

Jesse Lingard is expected to follow Cavani out the exit door on a free transfer, while Anthony Martial’s future at Sevilla is also uncertain.

United will also be without Mason Greenwood, who has been suspended pending the outcome of a police inquiry.

Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

If Mauricio Pochettino is appointed as United’s next permanent manager, he is expected to want to reconnect with Tottenham star Harry Kane.

According to ESPN, United is no longer a contender for the 21-year-old, who has selected Real Madrid as his preferred destination.

As a result, Rangnick will be assisting the club in developing a list of alternative choices, which appears to include Schick.
