Many people have struggled to understand Marcus Rashford’s form this season. He is Manchester United’s leading scorer, with goals against Liverpool and Arsenal.

He also trumps against Omonia while the team was under pressure in Cyprus. But he went AWOL against Manchester City, admittedly due to an injury, and struggled against Chelsea after disappointing performances against Newcastle and Tottenham.

Because of United’s striker dilemma, he is set to lead the line against Sheriff on Thursday as the Reds look to finish first in their Europa League group. Despite Erik ten Hag’s suggestion last week that Anthony Martial was close to returning from injury, he has yet to return.

Meanwhile, it is unclear what the management will do with Cristiano Ronaldo once he is no longer on the wrong side of the law. Rashford’s dismal performances have all come while he has played as a central striker.

And all five of his goals have come while playing on the left side of the field. The England international has stated that the wing is his preferred position, but Ten Hag is currently without a choice in who plays up front.

Rashford, according to the boss, is a flexible player who can play in both positions with ease. “I think I can play both [left and middle],” he stated following his double against Omonia earlier this month.

“I think the left side is more natural for me.” I enjoy doing both, and I’m simply trying to help the team. That, I believe, is vital, and we have a number of guys in the squad who can play in various positions.”

His words demonstrate that he shares his manager’s perspective on his role in the club. Despite an unproductive appearance against Chelsea, Ten Hag described what Rashford brings after the game.

“I’m really thrilled with the energy he’s bringing this year to our team,” he remarked. As a result, I’m always pleased with his performance. He can play in the front, as a striker, or in any other position. It makes no difference where.”

Ten Hag has always favored adaptable players, and Rashford appears to be no exception. With Martial’s injuries continuing and Ronaldo’s future uncertain, Rashford should be prepared for a lengthy stint as the primary striker – possibly until a long-term replacement is found.
