Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United must improve their timing while pressing opponents after winning their third consecutive match against Crystal Palace.

United won 3-1 at Melbourne Cricket Ground to keep their pre-season winning streak intact ahead of Saturday’s match against Aston Villa in Perth.

Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho scored in a convincing win that was marred only by Joel Ward’s consolation and the dismissal of young defender Will Fish.

The players at Manchester United have responded admirably to Ten Hag’s expectations and approach, but the Dutchman insists they are still a work in progress.

“The timing (could be better),” Ten Hag told MUTV. “When you start the press, for example, I still see switches we can prevent and a better press we can prepare.”

“And I think we play good on the ball as well, but you see, when you’re up 2-0 or 3-0, the belief grows.” On the ball, we can also delay and postpone, as well as combat opponents so they come out and we can speed up. The 2-0 (goal) was really impressive.

“We are pleased with the progress we have made, but there is still much work to be done.” That is also true. We scored some fantastic goals.

“I agree [that United is winning the ball higher up the pitch], and it is also the team’s need.” We press all day and, if possible, high up the pitch.

“But if we can’t, we can do it in the lower block, but we also have to press and do it as a team.”
