Wesley Sneijder, a Dutch football legend, believes Manchester United’s interest in Wout Weghorst is a ruse. Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s contentious departure, the Red Devils entered the January transfer window seeking to bring in a backup striker.

Anthony Martial is the only recognized center forward in Erik ten Hag’s team, and the United manager has recently been obliged to deploy Marcus Rashford into the middle to help cover. Manchester United has been linked with deals for Joao Felix, Memphis Depay, and Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has subsequently joined Liverpool, while Chelsea has won the race to sign Felix, and Depay may end up replacing the Portuguese star at Atletico Madrid. It has left United with few options in the January transfer window, and the club is also short on funds.

They are now focusing on Weghorst, who joined Besiktas on loan from Burnley last summer. The 30-year-old made an impression in Turkey’s first flight, and he made headlines during the World Cup with two goals against Argentina, including a stunning equalizer at the conclusion of normal time.

Following his unsuccessful short stint in the Premier League with Burnley, United’s interest in Weghorst has raised some eyebrows. He provides Ten Hag with something new than what United already has in Martial, but Sneijder is baffled as to why United would be interested in the Dutchman.

“I think they’ve seen the trick with the free kick [in the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina], so they don’t fall for that in England anymore,” Sneijder said on Veronica Offside, according to Voetbal Primeur. Is he really the striker United has been looking for? No, I don’t believe so.

“There are still 300 of them in the Premier League. It must be a ruse. This simply cannot be true.” The fact that Besiktas signed Weghorst on loan for the entire season is United’s biggest stumbling hurdle in trying to sign him.

As a result, the Premier League club will have to pay a price for Besiktas to release him from his present contract. The Turkish side is thought to be hesitant to do so without compensation because they are still fighting toward the top of the table.

However, it has been rumored that Weghorst may be willing to pay the compensation sum out of his own pocket in order to force a move to Old Trafford.
