United has fallen behind in the Premier League and has already been eliminated from the League Cup and FA Cup.

It means that their only chance of earning a trophy this season is to win the Champions League, which they can start doing tonight (Wednesday night).

United return to European action in the opening leg of their last-16 encounter against De Gea’s former club Atletico Madrid, and it promises to be a memorable night for the Spanish goalkeeper.

De Gea joined United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, but has yet to play at their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which opened in 2017.

“It will be different because, as you say, they’ve moved stadium and, of course, many things will have changed in the meantime,” De Gea told Inside United.

“But, without a doubt, it will be a wonderful occasion to return to the club where it all began for me.” It will undoubtedly be unique.

“We know how passionate Atletico de Madrid fans are about their team, so it will be a special game for everyone.”

“I have a lot of friends at Atletico de Madrid, and it’ll be good to see them again, but it’s just another game.” We all want to win, including myself, and we’ll be heading into the game with that goal in mind.”

Since De Gea joined United 11 years ago, the team has only made it to the quarter-finals of the event twice, but he knows that just getting to the next round isn’t enough.

“Not only do we want to win the match, but we also want to win the Champions League.”

“We’ll do our best to do so, and we’ll approach it with a genuine passion and conviction, and we’ll give it our all.” It’s a fantastic competition.”
