David De Gea, Manchester United’s goalkeeper, has stated that he does not understand why his team ‘does not function.’

The Red Devils have had a mediocre season thus far. They have advanced to the Champions League’s last 16 round, where they will face Atletico Madrid.

United, on the other hand, were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round and the FA Cup in the fourth round, and are presently sixth in the Premier League, 21 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

Despite the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and club superstar Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window, the club has struggled.

De Gea, one of the team’s finest performances this season, stated in an interview with Spanish publication El Pais that he believes the club is ‘cursed.’

“I believe we’ve been cursed or something,” De Gea stated (quotes via the Daily Mail). “To tell you the truth, I have no idea what’s going on.”

“People always ask me about it, and we talk about it as a team and basically say ‘we don’t know what’s going on.'”

“I don’t know why this team doesn’t function,” says the coach. “We should have contended for more trophies, greater crowns.”

De Gea has 97 saves in the league, 13 more than his nearest competition, Leeds’ Ilian Meslier, but he doesn’t think this is a particularly appropriate statistic to set the pace in.

“I’m not sure if [the saves stat] is a good thing,” he explained.

“Teams generate a lot of opportunities for us. But that’s why I’m here: to try to stop goals and assist the squad in any way I can, and things are going well this year in that sense.

“Rangnick wants us to be ferocious, to always press and be aggressive.”

De Gea also feels Ronaldo leads by example and has asked his teammates to rally behind the Portuguese superstar.

He stated, “Just seeing him walk through the door makes you want to show you’re on his level.”

“He puts forth a lot of effort and sets high standards for himself.” He’s a little calmer than before, but he’s still a machine. That’s wonderful for all the lads to watch because it demonstrates how important it is to take after yourself if you want to be at the top for a long time.”
