In his exclusive essay for CaughtOffside, Romano suggested that Everton’s Jordan Pickford may be a good long-term successor for De Gea, while PSG’s Keylor Navas could be a good short-term option for the club.

For the time being, Red Devils fans will have to wait and watch what happens with De Gea, whose current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire at the conclusion of the season, with the option to extend it by one year.

According to Romano, United has yet to determine whether to do so, and the player has yet to make a definitive choice, with progress more likely to be made closer to January.

“Manchester United will make a decision on new contracts in the coming months, before January – nothing has been determined yet,” Romano explained.

“For sure, the De Gea problem needs to be clarified, but I’m told there’s still no decision on both the player and club sides.”

“I believe Pickford is a wonderful long-term goalkeeper, but Keylor Navas may be a great short-term option for many clubs.”

De Gea has been a tremendous servant for United, but some fans may believe it’s time to move on and bring in a younger player, as well as someone who is more comfortable with the ball at their feet, to fit Erik ten Hag’s style of play.
