United have had a difficult season and appear to be on the verge of missing out on the Champions League next season. Ralf Rangnick, the interim manager, will be replaced at the end of the season, with the former RB Leipzig manager taking on an advisory position.

Last month, the Manchester Evening News reported that Erik ten Hag is the United board’s favorite to be the next manager, and that he has been interviewed for the job. However, it was revealed earlier this week that the Old Trafford locker room is divided over Ten Hag’s probable hiring.

According to Trevor Sinclair, the next United manager must get go of three players who have played a key role in the team this season. Sinclair, speaking on talkSPORT, explained: “It makes no difference who the next manager is at Manchester United if they don’t get their ducks in a straight and put the right people in place.

“In that sequence, director of football, philosophy, recruitment, and manager. They’ll merely end up with a mismatch of players if they don’t.

“If you look to the side, you’ll see [Paul] Pogba, who is ready to play. Sancho has been brought in as a winger, but he can’t beat a player because he isn’t quick enough.

“You’ve got [Raphael] Varane, but I’m still on the fence about him. Why are you bringing Ronaldo into the football club in the first place? You have him, you can’t press.

“This is something I said last summer. He’ll score a lot of goals, but will Manchester United be successful as a result of his efforts?

“No, I don’t believe so. I don’t believe that’s what they required.

“If you’re going to start with the backline, De Gea is a good place to start. With his feet, he’s not up to par. De Gea’s feet aren’t good enough to play through the lines and play the modern game that all of the best teams are doing.”

De Gea has been United’s top player so far this season. The Spaniard has made a slew of vital saves, including one on Saturday against Leicester City. Meanwhile, with 18 goals, Ronaldo is the club’s leading scorer. Sancho has improved in 2022 after a poor start to the season. United’s Player of the Month for February was the former Borussia Dortmund standout.
