The 37-year-old returned to United in the summer after a 12-year absence, opting for a reunion with the Red Devils over a move to City, who had been close to bringing him to the Etihad Stadium after reaching an agreement to leave Juventus.

Ronaldo expected to join a United team capable of fighting for titles, but that has not happened – despite his best efforts, which have delivered 15 goals in 23 games across all competitions, they are currently in last place in the Premier League and have been eliminated from both domestic cups.

PSG wants Ronaldo to form an all-star front three with Neymar and long-time adversary Lionel Messi, according to 90min. Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been fielding inquiries from all around the world, one of which has come from PSG.

PSG’s owners, Qatar Sports Investments – a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority and the country’s sovereign wealth fund – are also keen to boost their football profile ahead of the World Cup later this year, according to sources, and the signing of global superstar Ronaldo would undoubtedly help.

PSG is preparing for Kylian Mbappe’s summer transfer to Real Madrid, and while that isn’t ideal, bringing in Ronaldo – who hasn’t decided on his future – might ease the pain somewhat despite his advanced years.

The expected arrival of Zinedine Zidane as PSG’s new head coach, who is set to succeed Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the season, might also be a major role.

Ronaldo has never been shy about his tight friendship with Zidane, which dates back to their time together at Real Madrid. “I adore working with Zidane,” Ronaldo revealed during his time in the Spanish city. I adore his demeanour.”

PSG is also believed to be interested in Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, whose long-term future in Germany is uncertain, as well as Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland – though they are not regarded one of the favourites to sign the Norwegian.
