Erik ten Hag has named Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane his first-choice central defensive pairing this season, causing Maguire to fall down the defensive pecking order and make only seven Premier League starts.

Ten Hag had the option of removing Maguire’s armband following his hiring, but the player got public support from the Dutchman and maintained as club captain, despite plans to limit his starting appearances.

In Maguire’s absence, Bruno Fernandes has served as de facto captain, and he is anticipated to be officially appointed captain if Maguire leaves the club this summer.

When asked about Maguire during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, Vidic agreed that he should not be club captain since he is unable to command respect in the dressing room as a result of his disappointing performances.

“Maguire has a problem since he is underperforming. “It’s difficult to tell someone what to do when you’re not performing well,” Vidic stated on Vibe with Five. “I believe Maguire is doing well for the national team; he was fantastic for Leicester.”

“However, he’s clearly struggling to perform for Manchester United in the same way he does for other clubs.” But gaining that kind of respect is difficult; it’s nothing against Maguire now. In general, any captain must be first and set an example. A captain must perform well and fight for the club, and then everyone else will.”

Maguire has a contract with United until the summer of 2025, although he might leave this summer.
