Erik ten Hag is rumoured to have been given a £120 million budget to revamp his squad during the summer transfer window.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United has offered the Danish international a one-year contract with the option of an extension.

The 30-year-old is said to have thought the Red Devils’ financial terms were ‘reasonable.’ However, there remains one huge roadblock between United and Eriksen: his former club, Tottenham Hotspur.

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is playing a “significant role” in the North London club’s pursuit of their former player.

The playmaker joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and quickly established himself as an important member of the squad, particularly under Mauricio Pochettino, as he played a key role in the team’s journey to the Champions League final in 2019. They were ultimately defeated by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who won 2-0. Goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi helped.

Eriksen previously worked with Conte at Inter Milan, where the two won the Serie A title together.

He was forced to leave the Italian giants after suffering a heart arrest while playing for Denmark in the Euro last year.

Eriksen has spent half a season in the Premier League with Brentford since leaving Milan, where he helped the newly promoted club secure another season in the top tier of English football.

Eriksen demonstrated during his time with the Bees that he is still capable of playing at a top level, displaying glimpses of brilliance that greatly aided Thomas Frank’s side.

There is no doubt that United want to sign Eriksen, but with Spurs looming in the background, the familiar surroundings of Spurs and working with Conte, as well as the fact that the player is thought to prefer staying in London, United may end up fighting a losing battle for Eriksen.

Brentford is also thought to be working hard to entice Eriksen to return to the club.

It remains to be known which club Eriksen will join, but United appears to have the upper hand for the time being.
