Aaron Ramsdale thinks Arsenal are too good to blame the pitch for losses like Thursday night’s – and admits he was wrong.

It’s fair to say that some things went against Arsenal in their game against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday, but many of those problems were of their own making.

From Arsenal’s poor finishing to Aaron Ramsdale’s lack of finishing, which gave PSV a goal, the Gunners couldn’t point the finger at anyone else.

While it is also true that the pitch was slippery and bumpy in equal measure, and that the referee made some questionable decisions, Ramsdale refused to make excuses. The goalkeeper felt that Arsenal did not compete sufficiently with their opponents.

“There were a number of things,” said Ramsdale. “But we are a good enough team not to blame things, obviously the pitch and so on.

“There’s no point talking about it. We’re not very competitive without the ball. Credit to them too, obviously, because they did a good job of organising.

“But it doesn’t help when you come away from home, the keeper makes a mistake, 2-0, it’s a tough battle that we have to recover from.”

Arsenal will certainly have no excuses in their final group game, playing at home to the bottom team in the group, who have taken just three points from five games.

If they can’t win that game to top the group, they probably don’t deserve that top spot.
