This summer, United must bolster a variety of positions, none more so than midfield, which requires at least one, preferably two new arrivals to improve the middle of the park and offset departures. Erik ten Hag, the new manager, has picked De Jong, a former player, as the ideal person to assist him establish his identity on the team.

It appeared improbable at first that United would be able to attract a player of such caliber, especially given that they won’t be able to offer Champions League football next season, but Barcelona appears to be growing increasingly interested in signing the Dutchman. If they wish to make any additions this summer, they will have to raise funds in the market due to their persistent financial predicament.

De Jong is no longer necessary at the Camp Nou, thanks to the rise of young midfielders Pedri and Gavi, making him one of their few expendable assets that would still fetch a high price. That price has been set, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Barcelona is said to have warned United that a guaranteed sum of at least £73 million is required for the 25-year-old, and that ‘conversations’ are still ongoing.
