Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a Manchester United-connected millionaire, has hailed Joel and Avram Glazer as “decent gentlemen” while distancing themselves from the club.

The 69-year-old, who owns the chemicals business Ineos and is Britain’s richest man, has previously expressed a desire to buy a Premier League club.

However, he has now stated why the Old Trafford giants are no longer a viable choice, citing Chelsea’s recent sale to Todd Boehly.

“The Glazer family owns Manchester United. Joel and Avram are people I’ve met. They are the nicest guys I have ever met, true gentlemen “He stated this at a Financial Times event.

“They do not wish to sell it (the club). It is owned by the father’s six children.

“Yes, if it had been for sale in the summer, we would have given it a shot after the Chelsea situation. But we can’t sit around expecting Manchester United will become available one day.”

Despite being a season-ticket holder at Chelsea, the chemical engineer and businessman supports the Red Devils and already owns FC Lausanne-Sport and Nice in Ligue 1.

Ratcliffe’s claimed a net worth of £10.9 billion places him in the top five Premier League owners in terms of the combined net value of ownership groups.

Ratcliffe’s fortune would place him ahead of Arsenal’s Stan Kroenke of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, who is estimated to be worth £8.9 billion.

Despite pressure from supporters and ex-players such as Gary Neville, the Glazers have never expressed a desire to sell up.

Earlier this year, he stated: “The time has come for the Glazer family to sell the football club; the time has come, the time has come, the time has come, the time has come, the time has come, the time has arrived, the time has I’m not going to criticize the coach; the coach needs time, a lot of time.

“And I’ve actually gotten to the point where I’m not going to go after the players anymore because if you have a business and the people that work in the business can’t do the job for you, you fire them.”
