The Red Devils were ‘furious’ after being taken off guard by the TV appearance, and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he felt ‘betrayed’ by the club. Ronaldo stated that United’s leadership was attempting to drive him out and that he had little respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

United has sought legal counsel, and various media publications, including the Mirror, are saying that attorneys have advised them that they have grounds to terminate Ronaldo’s contract for breach of contract.

On Friday, the club issued the following statement: “Manchester United took necessary to action this morning in reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. We will not make any further comments until this process is completed.”

Ronaldo and his representatives are expected to oppose United’s plans, which will cost the 37-year-old superstar approximately £16 million in lost income.

Many clubs are expected to be interested in signing him, with Chelsea being one of the clubs prominently connected with a move for the Portugal international.

According to football.London, Chelsea discussed a move for Ronaldo in July. Todd Boehly then met with the striker’s agent, Jorge Mendes, in the summer to discuss a variety of issues, according to The Athletic. However, Thomas Tuchel was a stumbling point in the discussions, and the deal eventually fell through. It remains to be seen whether Graham Potter shares this viewpoint.
