Michael Knighton, who came close to buying Manchester United over 30 years ago, has revealed he and a syndicate are working on a bid to buy the club from the Glazer family.

Former Manchester United director Michael Knighton, who famously came close to purchasing the club in the 1980s, has announced that he intends to make a formal bid to purchase the club from the Glazer family.

Following a poor summer in the transfer market and a slew of errors in recent years, the club’s American owners are under increasing pressure to sell. Hundreds of Manchester United fans marched from Media City to Old Trafford ahead of the club’s season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

The protest grew in magnitude as it reached the stadium, forcing the club megastore to close its doors twice. With only ten minutes of the game played, anti-Glazer shouts filled the Old Trafford air, as Avram Glazer made his first visit to Old Trafford for a Premier League fixture in nearly a year.

Following numerous seasons of mediocrity, United supporters are desperate for a change in ownership, with the club’s actions in the transfer market this summer proving to be the final straw for many, given that this season was intended to herald the beginning of new dawn under Erik ten Hag. With their circumstances not improving, Knighton, who came close to buying United in 1989, has announced that he and a syndicate are working on a bid to buy United.

“We are a club in crisis, and we all know why,” Knighton told Manchester United The Religion. “We have inadequate and basically useless ownership that knows nothing about football.

“Everyone understands that we require new ownership for this football club, and that is my goal and ambition. I’m making good progress, I’m still talking to people, and I’ve gotten some good pledges and funding.

“We’re now working on the offer document. Remember, this is a hostile bid, which means the club is not officially for sale. But my objective is to make a credible, potent, and commercial offer to these proprietors, saying, ‘You have run out of the road, it’s time to depart because your time is up.’

“And, to be honest, supporters all around the world have had enough of this administration. The joyful sensation of a new season, which we all have, and that balloon of excitement, it was all shattered by the performance against Brighton. The club is in turmoil and will remain so as long as this current owner is in place.”

Knighton continued: “We need to get rid of this ownership because they have had their day, the time has run out, and we have had 17 years of disappointment. It’s time for them to leave.

“They must cease taking such large dividends from the club. We must stop paying these exorbitant debt servicing rates. It is finally time for them to sell.

“I don’t need to be the front person or the spokesperson when putting this bid together. I simply want to see our Manchester United Football Club in the hands of competent football administrators with a clear vision.

“We need to rehabilitate our stadium and return our club to its rightful place. We are in catastrophe, and nothing will change until they leave.”
