Senior Man Utd star backed to leave after Ten Hag demotion, as common criticism is branded ‘nonsense’

According to a former England manager, a big Manchester United player who has fallen out with Erik ten Hag has proven people wrong in Qatar and "has to leave" if his situation does not improve after the World Cup.

Ten Hag’s presence has helped to revitalize several aspects of a struggling Manchester United squad. United had a bad reputation for underachievement, with several veteran players repeatedly chastised for failing to deliver when it counted most. The club was also plagued by a perceived lack of effort on the field.

Ten Hag has swiftly adapted to his new squad, transforming them into a hardworking unit that is also visually appealing. However, not every United player has benefited from the arrival of the Dutchman.

Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual consent after less than six months. Harry Maguire is another senior talent that has underperformed under Ten Hag.

The 29-year-old is still the club captain, but he rarely plays these days.

Lisandro Martinez, a summer recruit, rapidly formed a strong pair with Raphael Varane. Maguire was demoted to the bench as a result, but the Manchester Evening News claims it’s even worse.

They also claim Maguire is now the fourth choice behind Victor Lindelof. Despite his struggles at the club level, Maguire remains an important figure for his country.

The media reacted angrily to Gareth Southgate’s unflinching faith in Maguire. He’s seldom made a mistake for the Three Lions and was expected to keep his starting spot in Qatar.

Maguire did definitely receive the nod in Iran’s 6-2 defeat. Southgate is poised to announce an unchanged team for the match against the United States on Friday night.

Maguire gains support from an ex-England leader.
Former England manager Sam Allardyce has now encouraged Maguire to leave Manchester United if his situation at Old Trafford does not improve.

After a strong performance against Iran, Allardyce believes Maguire has already silenced his detractors. He also believes Maguire can put himself in a good position by starring in Qatar, giving Ten Hag a decision while also generating transfer interest.

“Harry Maguire immediately quiet the detractors,” Allardyce stated.

“People say it was only Iran, but it was a major moment for him, and he handled it well.”

“It puts him in a difficult position when he returns to United because if he isn’t going to be picked, he needs to leave.”

“He’s certainly proven to everyone in the press who was trying to put pressure on Gareth [Southgate] not to play him and claiming he’s not good enough to play for United or England that he is.” He’s demonstrated that to be false.”

Maguire was linked to Chelsea late in the summer transfer window, but a deal never materialized.

His contract in Manchester is set to expire in 2025, with the club having the option to extend it for another year. As a result, any potential sale appears to be the result of Maguire forcing his way out or Ten Hag deciding once and for all that Maguire isn’t for him.
