Arsene Wenger’s return to Arsenal would be welcomed by both manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu four years after his left. Wenger’s 22-year reign as manager ended in 2018, but speculation of a comeback in another role seemed unavoidable given his historic standing at the club.
Former Arsenal midfielder Bacary Sagna feels the club could ‘do something great’ if Wenger assumed a higher-level position. Genting Casino, he said: “I’d love to see [Arsene] Wenger return to the club. Arsenal, in conjunction with Mikel [Arteta], has the potential to achieve incredible things.”
In Arteta’s third season in charge, the Gunners are closing in on a return to the Champions League with a top-four finish. And, back in November, the Spaniard stated a desire to collaborate closely with Wenger as the fruits of his rebuilding at the Emirates Stadium started to bear fruit.
“I would like him to be closer to me personally because I think it would be a wonderful benefit, a great help for the club,” Arteta added. “Things take time, and I believe he must set those timelines. What I can say for myself, and I believe on behalf of everyone else, is that we would be thrilled to have him considerably closer.”
After chatting with Wenger at the screening of his documentary, Arsene Wenger: Invincible, Edu chimed in a few days after Arteta’s comments. He expressed his desire to collaborate with the Frenchman again in north London.
He stated: “I told him that in the future, I’d like to see him a little closer to the club and to myself. That would be a tremendous treat and something extremely special for everyone here.” He continued, saying: “We were wonderful buddies who helped one other out. That’s what we want to do if I can help develop it again.”
Wenger won ten major trophies during his legendary time at Arsenal, including three Premier League crowns. However, he is currently FIFA’s head of global development and has supposedly not returned to the Emirates Stadium since being fired by Unai Emery in 2018.
However, as Arsenal approaches re-entry into the Champions League, Wenger may be enticed to return to the club in what appears to be a new era.
