Erik ten Hag has been advised by Manchester United about the prospect of signing Pau Torres during the summer transfer window.

United is hoping to acquire a new center-back this year and has kept an eye on Villarreal’s Fernando Torres after considering him under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a year ago.

According to the Manchester Evening News, preliminary conversations have taken hold to assess the likelihood of a Torres transfer, and the transfer has also been discussed internally with Ten Hag.

The 25-year-old was on a five-man shortlist when United was looking for a center-back last year and was seen as a backup option during their successful pursuit of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

Torres still has a €60 million release clause in his current contract after signing a contract extension until 2024 three years ago. Villarreal was open to a player-plus-cash deal for Torres last year, but their priority would be to sell him for cash only.

During initial recruitment discussions, Ten Hag championed Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, while the club held preliminary conversations with Antonio Rudiger’s representation before he chose to join Real Madrid.

United are willing to allow Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, and Phil Jones depart at the conclusion of the season in order to bolster their defensive alternatives.

Bailly has made seven appearances for United this season, whereas Jones has only made one start in the prior two years. Tuanzebe may also depart after two unsuccessful loan spells with Aston Villa and Napoli.
