With the score at 2-1, Bayern was awarded a penalty for a handball by Christian Eriksen. The ball unintentionally struck Eriksen’s hand inside the penalty area following a close-range header from Dayot Upamecano.

Referee Glenn Nyberg was summoned to the pitchside monitor by VAR and subsequently awarded the spot-kick upon review. Kane confidently stepped up and placed his shot into the corner, eluding Andre Onana to make it 3-1, effectively sealing Bayern’s victory.

However, just before taking the penalty, Kane found himself confronted by United defender Lisandro Martinez, who locked eyes with him and exchanged a few words as Kane prepared to take the spot-kick. Sergio Reguilon was also in close proximity, attempting to unsettle Kane, until United captain Bruno Fernandes intervened and separated the players.

Neither Martinez’s words nor Onana’s attempts could deter United, who have now suffered three consecutive defeats for the first time since 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Martinez’s encounter with Kane did not end there, as the Argentine international later pushed the English striker along the touchline.

Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka took exception to the foul, which sent Kane colliding with the linesman, sparking a shoving match between Goretzka and Martinez. Both players received yellow cards from the referee, but it was Goretzka and Kane who ultimately had reason to smile that night.

Bayern took the lead in the 28th minute when Leroy Sane exchanged passes and unleashed a shot from the edge of the area, which Onana pushed into the corner. Four minutes later, the lead extended to 2-0, with Jamal Musiala breaking into the penalty area and setting up Serge Gnabry for a shot into the bottom corner.

Rasmus Hojlund reduced the deficit, thanks to Marcus Rashford’s assist, albeit with a substantial deflection. However, the elation was short-lived as Eriksen’s handball presented Kane with a golden opportunity, which he duly capitalized on.

Sane struck the post, and Onana made multiple saves as Thomas Tuchel’s side demonstrated their prowess. United pulled another goal back through Casemiro, who scored from the ground, but Mathys Tel came off the bench to make it 4-2 with a superb finish. Casemiro then flicked in Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick for a 4-3 score deep into added time, but it proved to be too little, too late.

United traveled to Bavaria with several key players sidelined due to injuries and will now face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday night. The challenges faced by United were foreseen by Paul Scholes before the match. “That team does worry me slightly,” he stated on TNT Sports.
