Erik ten Hag was paid more than £200m to strengthen his squad last summer, but he could be ready to invest again.

What about Gakpo?

According to The Athletic, United are still monitoring the 23-year-old for the January and summer transfer window.

However, the report adds that the Red Devils could face competition from Real Madrid and Arsenal for his signature.

The North West club have already been linked with Gakpo this summer, when a fee of £38m was offered for his services.

United, who had already spent heavily on Antony from Ajax, did not follow through at the time, but it seems they have not lost interest.

PSV coach Ruud van Nistelrooy recently addressed the speculation surrounding Gakpo, admitting there was interest from the Premier League and beyond in their “outstanding” star.

But the United legend added that the player was fully focused on the Eredivisie season and the upcoming World Cup, suggesting that future decisions have been put on hold for now.

What did Jones say about the situation?

Jones understands that, despite Arsenal’s alleged interest, it is United who are most likely to win the race.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s been brilliant this season with PSV, and there’s no doubt he’ll be looking for a transfer in 2023. So I still think he’s a player people should take seriously in the Premier League for a transfer. I still think Manchester United are more likely to get him than Arsenal.

Do United need Gakpo?

Cristiano Ronaldo asked to leave the club in the summer transfer window and, after further controversy, his departure is beginning to look inevitable.

Ten Hag should therefore look to strengthen his attacking options.

Although Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga remain at Old Trafford, none of these stars have consistently impressed.

If United want to get back into title contention, they need to start winning races for the higher-rated stars.

The arrival of Gakpo, who has already scored 55 goals for PSV after an impressive 13-goal run this season, would be a step in the right direction.
