The Dutchman was manager of Manchester United from 2014 to 2016, winning the FA Cup final in his final game with the club, and is presently in his third stint as manager of the Netherlands national team.

Van Gaal, on the other hand, has lately admitted that he has been making covert hospital appointments to deal with his cancer diagnosis – something he had been withholding from his players in order not to distract them.

According to BBC Sport, LVG stated, “I didn’t want to notify my players because it could have affected their performances.”

“From the time I was manager of the national team till today, I had to leave in the middle of the night to go to the hospital without the players knowing.” I thought I was healthy, but I’m not.”

Following the news, Manchester United sent a message of solidarity to Van Gaal…

Van Gaal is not just a terrific manager, but he is also a major character in the game, and everyone will be wishing him well in these trying times.

The 70-year-old had his detractors for the manner his United team played during his two seasons in England, but he was always popular with both fans and players.

Van Gaal’s first wife, Fernanda Obes, died of cancer in the 1990s, and the BBC quotes him as discussing the incident in a new documentary on his life.

“I’ve been through a lot with sickness, especially with my own wife,” he remarked. That’s just a fact of life.

“I believe that all of those events have made me a better person.”
