After appearing only eight times in the Premier League this season, the central midfielder was looking to leave Manchester United on a temporary basis. Leeds was apparently considering making an approach, while Everton and Newcastle were also interested.

Van van Beek, 24, eventually joined Everton on transfer deadline day. His arrival coincided with the hiring of Frank Lampard, a great midfielder who will now attempt to influence the Dutchman’s game.

Merson, an Arsenal fan, believes Van de Beek can relaunch his career with the Toffees.

The commentator is especially harsh on United’s treatment of their £40 million signing from Ajax. During his 16 months as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s manager, he started just 11 games.

Merson told Sportskeeda, “I felt sad for Donny van de Beek at Manchester United.”

“He never grumbled and just went about his business.” Manchester United, I believe, has missed a trick here. He’s a fantastic player, and I believe he’ll be a huge success at Everton.

“Frank Lampard can kickstart Van de Beek’s career.” He was a standout at Ajax before falling behind the eight ball at Manchester United.”

Merson on the midfielder’s failure at Old Trafford
Merson has an intriguing opinion when asked why he may have fallen short at United.

“At a club of such caliber, you have to hit the ground running the moment you walk in the door.” He was never given an opportunity at United, however. If things weren’t going well for United, he was always the first to go.

“The atmosphere at Everton might suit him.” In the Premier League, they are nowhere near as large a club. As a result, expectations will be lower.

“He’ll be able to relax and play the game that took him to Manchester United in the first place, which was at Ajax.”

Van van Beek will be looking to make his Everton debut against Newcastle United on Tuesday night in the Premier League.
