Genesis’ “The Last Domino? Tour” came after a 14-year live performance hiatus
Genesis will be no more, performing its final show at London’s 02 Arena on Saturday night. Former drummer Phil Collins was joined by keyboardist Tony Banks and guitarist Mike Rutherford. Collins, 71, sat center stage the entire time, despite being increasingly frail with back and hip problems. He was, however, in good spirits, reportedly joking at one point that he’ll now need to find a real job after the band’s demise.
Collins’ son, Nic, joined the trio on tour, having previously filled in for his father behind the kit on his father’s recent solo tours. Daryl Stuermer, a long-time touring member, returned on guitar and bass, and was joined by Daniel Pearce on backing vocals and percussion and Patrick Smyth on backing vocals and tambourine. The final night’s 23 songs were nearly identical to the band’s recent UK and US tours.
Genesis formed in 1967 and went on to become a major act in the 1970s with Peter Gabriel, selling over 100 million records. Collins joined the band in 1970 as a drummer and backing vocalist before taking over as lead vocalist in 1975 when Gabriel left to pursue a solo career. According to conflicting reports, Gabriel was in the audience for the final show.
