Last Saturday, the Portugal international struggled to make an impact against Southampton. Paul Scholes was particularly harsh on his whole performance.

Last night’s performance against the Seagulls, on the other hand, was vastly improved. Ronaldo scored the goal in the 51st minute with a magnificent individual strike before Lewis Dunk was sent off.

United made it difficult for themselves by failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Fernandes provided two superb crosses for Ronaldo, but the latter was unable to extend the lead.

Fernandes was also to blame for squandering a fantastic scoring opportunity comparable to Jadon Sancho’s in the first half. He made apologies right towards the end, scoring a counter-attacking goal in the 96th minute to seal the victory.

The 27-year-old was far from his best against the Seagulls, but he was a significant creative presence in the second half. He finished the game with 79 touches, three shots on goal, and five crucial chances.

United were second best during long stretches of the first half, when Brighton dominated possession. David de Gea, the club’s goalkeeper, came to the club’s rescue once more with a fantastic acrobatic save.

Brighton’s demise was precipitated by Yves Bissouma’s giving of possession to Ronaldo before to his goal. They lost the plot moments later when Dunk was sent off for denying a clear scoring opportunity.

United still needed to take advantage of the circumstance. Brighton came within a whisker of equalizing twice. For once, the Red Devils were fortunate in that they were able to maintain their slim lead.

With goals from Ronaldo and Fernandes, there were some positives to take forward. Both players should be unhappy with the missed opportunities.

With the 2-0 victory, United moved up to fourth place in the league. They lead West Ham United by two points. The emphasis will now be on putting together a winning streak.
