
On April 28, 2025, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they had mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Mike Sullivan, concluding a decade-long tenure that included two Stanley Cup championships. Sullivan, 57, had been with the team since December 2015, leading the Penguins to back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017. Under his guidance, the team achieved a regular-season record of 409–255–89 and a playoff record of 44–38 .
Despite these successes, the Penguins faced challenges in recent seasons. The 2024–25 season concluded with a 34–36–12 record, marking the third consecutive year the team missed the playoffs . General Manager Kyle Dubas emphasized that the decision was made to guide the team through a transitional phase, acknowledging Sullivan’s significant contributions to the franchise .
Following his departure from Pittsburgh, Sullivan was appointed as the head coach of the New York Rangers. His appointment aims to restore stability and competitiveness to the Rangers, who had missed the playoffs in the previous season .
As of May 2025, the Penguins have not announced a replacement for Sullivan. Team captain Sidney Crosby stated that he has no involvement in the search for the new head coach, indicating that the decision lies solely with the management .
The Penguins are now entering a new era, seeking a head coach who can build upon the team’s legacy and lead them back to playoff contention.
