Announced on Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts are cutting veteran Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher Genard Avery.
They are moving on from Avery after activating Tyquan Lewis from injured reserve, and it will be Avery’s spot on the roster that he will take. Avery has been in the NFL for multiple seasons, and the Colts are the latest team to waive him. If he clears waivers and does not find a new home, it seems likely that he will re-sign to the Colts’ practice squad.
The 29-year-old has played with the Colts since 2023, when he signed with the team. He has played with five different teams since being a fifth-round pick out of Memphis in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
One brief tenure with the Steelers is part of that. After the Steelers and Avery felt that the schematic fit did not work out, Avery signed a one-year contract with Pittsburgh but was shortly let go. After that, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Avery had his best seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2019 to 2021. He has 106 total tackles and 8.5 sacks.
