Philadelphia Phillies Sign Corbin Burnes to Four-Year Contract

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant splash in the free-agent market, securing reigning Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes on a four-year contract worth $100 million. The deal, which was finalized on Monday, aims to strengthen the Phillies’ starting rotation as they look to contend for a World Series title in the coming seasons.

Burnes, 29, has established himself as one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball over the past few years. After a breakout 2021 season, where he won the NL Cy Young, Burnes continued to dominate on the mound with a 3.39 ERA and 235 strikeouts in 2023 for the Milwaukee Brewers. His ability to generate swings and misses with his elite fastball and slider has made him one of the most feared pitchers in the National League.

The Phillies, who came within two games of a World Series championship last season, had been looking to bolster their pitching staff, especially after the departure of ace Aaron Nola to free agency. Burnes now joins a rotation that includes Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola’s replacement, providing the Phillies with a formidable trio at the top of their pitching staff.

Burnes expressed excitement about joining the Phillies and their competitive window. “This is a championship-caliber team, and I’m looking forward to helping them get over the top,” Burnes said at his introductory press conference.

With this signing, the Phillies have solidified their status as one of the top contenders in the National League.
