Tennessee Volunteers Name New Starting QB for Georgia Showdown
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has announced a change at quarterback for the Vols as they prepare to face No. 2 Georgia this Saturday. Redshirt freshman Tyler Shaw will take over as the starting signal-caller, replacing veteran starter Joe Milton, who has struggled with consistency in recent weeks.
Shaw, a highly-touted recruit from Nashville, has impressed coaches and teammates with his poise in practice and a strong arm that can stretch the field. While he has seen limited action this season, Shaw’s potential has been evident, and Heupel believes the change is necessary to give the team the best chance to compete against the Bulldogs’ formidable defense.
“We believe Tyler gives us the best opportunity to move the ball and make plays down the field,” Heupel said in a statement. “He’s shown growth and maturity in his limited opportunities, and it’s time for him to step into a bigger role.”
Milton, a senior with significant experience, has had flashes of brilliance but has struggled with accuracy and decision-making, particularly in key moments. While Heupel did not rule out the possibility of Milton playing in relief, the focus now shifts to Shaw and his ability to manage the game and keep Tennessee competitive in the high-stakes matchup.
The Vols (7-2) are hoping Shaw can spark their offense as they take on Georgia (8-0), a team that has dominated the SEC East and is considered a national title contender. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Neyland Stadium.
