The band has called the song an homage to Blondie, Giorgio Moroder, and the city of Las Vegas
U2 are back with a new single called “Atomic City.” The track launches alongside the debut of their U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere shows in Las Vegas. The band has called the track an homage to Blondie, Giorgio Moroder, the Clash, 1970s punk and post-punk, and the city of Las Vegas. (Las Vegas was referred to as “Atomic City” in the 1940s and ’50s.) Listen to the song below.
“Atomic City” is the first original song from U2 since their Sing 2 offering “Your Song Saved My Life” in 2021. This year, they released Songs of Surrender, a 40-track collection of reimagined songs from across their discography.
And as they prepare to go Vegas — where no respectable band would have dared to go back in the day when they ruled rock — “Atomic City” finds the quintessentially earnest quartet coming out swinging and swaggering rather than taking themselves so seriously.
